Cross Country or quite simply distance running in general has been a main staple at Clairemont High School since the doors opened in 1958. As many records still stand from the Golden Years of that time. Not only do some records still stand from the Golden Years for the Boys and Girls side, Clairemont High student-athletes have great success over the years qualifying for the California State Cross Country Meet. This State Meet race first began in 1987. Clairemont High first sent a representative in 1989, then from 1992 until 2013 individuals or teams have made the trip to the California State Cross Country Meet. Recently, in 2017, Freshman at the time Gioia Ternasky and Senior at the time Dafne Perez broke the drought to represent Clairemont High at the California State Cross Country Meet.

Cross Country is the sport in which mind over matter is truly represented. Practices are based on running a minimum of 30 minutes, Monday through Friday sometimes Saturday too. Meets, Invitationals, or races are based on the simple concept of who can sustain the fastest pace over 3 miles. As a result, in order to have success the student must find a purpose to their running. This is what Cross Country is about.
